The mission of the learning Center is to assist students of all grade levels in becoming successful, efficient, and independent learners.  Research confirms that children learn in many different ways. Understanding these differences makes Brookstone effective  in helping students develop in their areas of weakness.  Paramount to achieving this mission is proper collaboration and partnership with parents and faculty n determining a learning plan that will help meet each student's goals.

Goals and Objectives:

The Learning Center Director should have an in depth understanding of learning differences.  This position manages confidential material.  A critical role is that he/she advocates for the student and has the ability to express vision and hope to the students and their families.  It is important to prioritize relationship building, as well as exhibit effective communication skills.  The focus is to nurture and care for students and families dealing with sensitive circumstances.  Empathy and encouragement are key to creating a successful environment for students and parents.

Learning Center Director Duties:

LC Team:

  • Represents Learning Center on the Administrative Team
  • Establishes a working relationship with school principals and faculty
  • Supervises all Learning Center team members
  • Develops Learning Center curriculum and coursework for all grade levels
  • Implements and manages Learning Center strategic plans and projects
  • Leads Learning Center Department Meetings
  • Prioritizes professional development to include current research and resources involving learning differences
  • Creates relationships with peer learning centers at other schools
  • Establishes benchmarks to document growth for each student

Faculty Collaboration:

  • Establishes a working relationship with school principals and faculty
  • Attends cross-divisional meetings
  • Schedules parent, teacher, and student meetings for Learning Center services
  • Counsels with students, parents, and faculty
  • Conducts student classroom observations
  • Collaborates with principals for SST by division
  • Provides research and resources to faculty and parents
  • Coordinates ACT/SAT test preparation services through Beth Bristow Tutorial

Student/ Family Resources:

  • Implements seminars for teachers and parents periodically on various topics of child development and learning including bringing nationally recognized guests
  • Develop and implement strategies to meet the needs of students with a variety of learning differences
  • Coordinates annual screening for Lower School students
  • Oversees speaker series on relevant topics for students, parents, and faculty

Educational Testing/Resource Advisor:

  • Administers and scores a battery of individual educational benchmarks (or tests)
  • Writes prescriptive report
  • Interprets and communicates testing results with parents, teachers, principals
  • Provides strategies for classroom teachers and parents regarding learning differences

Learning Center Technology Aide:

  • Facilitates online learning
  • Coordinates and researches assistive technology
  • Maintains list of learning apps and other resources to benefit children with disabilities
  • Trains Learning Center staff on technology resources
  • Works individually with students to better understand their technological needs

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience and advanced degree in the area of speech pathology, psychometrics, and learning differences
  • Classroom experience

Minimum Qualifications:

  • College degree or higher
  • Extensive knowledge and training in learning differences
  • Counseling skills
  • Proficiency interpreting psychological evaluation reports

Additional Skills & Abilities:

  • Experience in computer technology integration
  • Proficiency in Google Applications
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Relational with the ability to be flexible
  • Willingness to serve students beyond regular school hours and duties on an as needed basis
  • Regularly sit, talk, hear, and interact with students, parents, staff, and visitors
  • Be able to occasionally lift up to 30 lbs
  • Work at a desk and computer screen
  • Turn, bend, reach , and occasionally use a ladder
  • Work in a traditional climate controlled atmosphere
  • Walk back and forth across campus, to and from classrooms
